Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS)

The Anti-Lock braking system or ABS is one of the most efficient braking systems available today. This is an effective way to bring your vehicle to stop without loosing the control over it. While you brake your vehicle, the most efficient braking pressure applies just before each wheel locks up. It is a common experience that when you apply the brakes suddenly, the wheels locks up and produces screeching sound. With this the vehicle does not stop nearly as short as it is capable of stopping. Another problem is, while the wheels are locked up, you loose all steering control so that, if you have a chance to steer around the obstacle, you will not be able to do so.

Anti-lock braking system clearly addresses the major problems of sudden braking. This system identifies the lockup problem and rapidly pumps the brakes whenever the system detects a wheel that is locked up. Usually, the wheel locked up wheel will receive the pumping, whereas full braking pressure remains available to the rest of the other wheels. With this method you can stop your vehicle in the shortest amount of time without loosing the control even if one or more wheels are on ice.  The anti-lock braking system uses a processor to monitor the speed of each wheel. After detection that one or more wheels have stopped or are turning much slower than the remaining wheels, the processor sends a signal to momentarily remove and reapply the pressure to the affected wheels to allow them to continue turning. This smart pumping of the brakes occurs at fifteen or more times a second, superior and incomparable to any human effort.  This system consists of an electronic control unit, a hydraulic actuator, and wheel speed sensors at each wheel.
